Upon entering the property, I was pleasantly greeted by the staff and I liked how the lobby area was spacious. When I got to my room, it was very clean and well lit! I liked this the most because my room did not feel small and cramped. The bathroom facilities were working well and I even had a nice TV screen to keep me company.

They allowed me to do a Late Check-in and Early Check-out...

They allowed me to do a Late Check-in and Early Check-out without problems. The staff like the Guard and the Receptionists were all very accommodating and super friendly.

I just didn’t feel safe in the neighbourhood, but this is not the Dorm’s problem.

Great value. Decent location if you don't mind a bit of walking.

>The staff were polite and nice. Check in and check out went by smoothly. >The location is convenient. It's surrounded by many small eateries, and access to public transport (jeepneys) is about a 10-minute walk away, which isn't too bad. MRT stations are a bit far if you don't like walking, though. Personally, I chose this place because of its proximity to the beautiful San Sebastian Church.

>The restroom in the room wasn't available for use. No big deal, the common restroom was fine. >Small cockroaches wandered about my room. I killed one, thinking it was the only one, but a while later another one scurried by.

Nice and polite staff!

They were clueless about my booking through booking.com arrived. Guard looks jittery when you talk to him, ends up not answering your question correctly. They're all nice but very confused.

Stay with the local students

The first thing you need to know when you book at Monchere Dormitory is that this isn't a regular hostel for backpackers. It is actually a dormitory facility for Filipino students who study in Manila and live too far to go back home everyday. That means that there is no real reception, it's definitely not open 24h/24 (but there's always a guard that can let you in and out), and of course, no touristic information can be provided. The wifi connection is pretty weak but existent, and they offer free drinking water all day and night. The place is extremely safe and the insonorisation is good, as well as the air conditioning. The beds are comfortable as well. No hot water in the shower (but given the temperature, it's not really necessary). However, I really enjoyed my stay here. The students are extremely nice (although not very keen on engaging a conversation, they are mostly shy), the rate is cheap, and the neighbourhood is actually pretty fun! At first you'll think "where am I?" but it's only 2,7km away from Intramuros (a tricycle will cost you between 100 and 150PHP to get there), and if you take a walk around, about 10 min from there you will find Quiapo church which is surrounded by some sort of local market place where you can find basically anything! It's very colourful and lively. It's not too close to the airport, but a taxi drive from there to the international terminal 1 will cost around 200PHP, depending on the traffic (make sure to ask for taximeter). All in all, I really enjoyed staying there because I felt I was in the heart of the Filipino life in Manila (although Manila is my least favourite place in the Philippines).

If you arrive after 5pm, it might be complicated to check in since there is no real reception. I arrived there around 10pm and was lucky someone was able to give me the key and let me into my dorm, otherwise I would have had to sleep in the lobby ;-) (the guard at the main door had let me in into the precinct but he doesn't have the keys to the dorms).
